How to start a Conversation and Introduce Yourself

Here are some tips to introduce yourself and start a conversation with someone.

.

A conversation is all about expressing your thoughts and trying to know a person, his interests level which sometimes leads to forming good connections as well professional or personal.  It's an important part of Communication and doesnt necessarily depend only on language, which is actually a myth. There are other factors also.  Also, your body language and tonality also play a very important role here when you approach a person, introduce yourself or get into a conversation with someone. Well, I will talk about the body language part in my next article. So here are some tips to introduce yourself and start a  conversation with someone.

1.  Introducing yourself -
There are instances or situations when you have to interact or converse with people or someone,  Eg: You are in a gathering surrounded by people or you are talking to someone on call , so you have to introduce yourself. Anyone would like to know your name and what you do. This actually gives a fair idea of a person 's background or a personality depending on what kind of work he does, eg- he is a doctor, or a student. So you can introduce yourself like this-

Shalini - Hi, This is Shalini.  What's your good name?

Rahul-  Hi Shalini!! I am Rahul.

Shalini-  Hi Rahul!!
I am a Life Coach, Writer and Anchor!!  How about you? What do you do?

Rahul-  I am an Entrepreneur. I provide digital marketing courses and also train people on the same. As you know ,that's the future and I want to create more Entrepreneurs like me.

Shalini- That's really nice to know Rahul!  Yes, I agree that Entrepreneurship and digital marketing is the future. And we have a common mission. So, how many years you have been into this?

Rahul- It has been 5 years now. How about you?

Shalini- It has been 4 years now for me as a Life Coach, Writing and Anchoring. Otherwise, I have many years of experience in Marketing and I am a Marketing professional as well.

Rahul-  Hey, well that's nice to know and another thing common in us.  So, what do you do in your free time? What are your hobbies?

Shalini-  Though , I hardly get any free time but whenever I do, I like to spend time with my close ones, and nature. I love birds, gardens, open sky.

Rahul-  Lovely!!  But you dont find all these on Delhi unfortunately and sadly. So, you like traveling? When was your last trip and where?

Shalini-  Yes sadly, Delhi has it's own life  so to say.  Ohhh my last trip was 5 years back when I went to Shirdi with my family, though I enjoyed the journey by train. I was really planning to go on a trip but then Covid happened. So, what are your hobbies? What do you like doing?

Rahul- I like to go to parties on the weekend with my friend and that's what Delhi life is good for.  You dont go to parties.

Shalini- Not really!  But I love dancing.  So, long back, once or twice, I had gone to parties with a friend, she took me but I just danced and came back.

And the conversation goes on and on.....

See it was quite simple and here my next tip comes which you must have learnt from above example.

2.  How to get into a conversation-
For a good conversation,  as we see  in above example,
(a) You need to be just yourself and comfortable with yourself first . Because that's your energy and vibe as body language goes to the other person.
(b) Keep a smile on your face  always. A joyful face is always beautiful and everyone likes that.
(c) Try to find a common topic or interest level of the other person comfortably.  His likes and dislikes and then share yours as well.  Some usual common topics are travelling or any book you read last time.
(d) Dont talk too much about yourself and try to listen more. You can find some related topic from what the other person is telling you, so be assertive and confident, and go with the flow. Often , we see, we do get bored with people who only talk about themselves and dont want to know or let other person speak. Conversation is a two way healthy process.
(e) Try to close or end a conversation by warm greetings as ....have a nice day, take care, loads of good luck etc. These are nice wishes you can give to the person when you leave. As it is said, first impression is always the last impression,  so if you can a leave  a mark on other person's mind, there are high chances that they will remember you and many times that's  how connections are also formed.  But nothing artificial or superficial here.
(f) Dont act too pushy, cheesy or desperate while having a conversation with a person or trying to know him. It never works and that person may not like to talk to you again. How comfortable you are, and the other person is with you, that really matters
(g) Last but not the least, be gentle and humble always. A good human being with a kind and helping heart sooner or later always stands out.
